St John’s students shine
The last ever group of students to sit their A-levels in the St John’s Stedman building have received their results today and as anticipated have once again achieved excellent results.
Over 100 students took a total of 300 exams in 37 different subjects. 26% of all results were Grade A and half of all results were Grade A or B. At least 80% of students already have confirmed places at university with more expected to confirm over the next 48 hours.
Headteacher Dr Patrick Hazlewood said
“This is another excellent performance for our students and I am sure these results will stand them in good stead for their future. I am very proud of their achievements and this is a just reward for all their hard work. I must also congratulate all the teachers who worked with these students, and thank all the families who have supported us over the last seven years.”
Some of the notable successes included Deborah de Beukelaer who achieved five A grades, following in her older sister’s Olivia’s footsteps who achieved the same grades last year. Katie Humphries, star of the school debating team achieved 4 A grades. A further twelve students achieved at least three A-grades: Jemma Adams, Lauren Atkins, Gemma Bowden, Harry Campion, Steph Harper, Peter Holloway, Poll Hudson, David Osborne, Mat Pitts, Clare Pocock, Ani Rendle and Becky Ripley.
Other students who have achieved success in their results are those who have made the most progress from their GCSEs two years ago and have achieved one or more grades above their target. They are Lucy Blackall, Mat Pitts, Chyna Sudbury, Harry Campion, David Osborne, Simon Case, Joe Melhuish, and Mille Quinton Smith.
These results follow on from the first set of International Baccalaureate Diploma results at St John’s, which are released six weeks earlier than A-level results. This internationally-recognised alternative to traditional A-levels was introduced at St Johns two years ago and is considered to offer a broader-based education and excellent base for university education, with a choice of six subjects as well as an extended essay and an element of community service. Staff at St John’s were thrilled with the number of high level IB diplomas awarded. Two of the St John’s students, Stephen Butler and Charlie Angelo were ranked among the top 1% of students worldwide.
Other students celebrating their success today are those receiving their AS-level results, which are taken in Year 12, a year before A levels. Two students in particular are celebrating their excellent results. Ben Edwards, who hopes to study Maths and Computing at Oxford has achieved 6 A grades and Deputy Head Boy Bertie Haskins has 4 A grades. With just weeks to go before the new school buildings these students will be among the first sixth formers to benefit from the new purpose-built sixth form common room and library in the new school and will be the first to sit their A levels in the new building.
