Students Design Their Own Library

August 10, 2009

For several weeks Year 9 graphics students at St John’s School in Marlborough have been working hard to finalise their designs for the library in the new school. Students were asked to come up with designs for the panels at the end of the rows of shelving, for the subject headings on the tops of the library shelves, and also for designs for a frosted glass panel along the glass wall that will be a central feature of the new school when it opens in December.

Students worked in groups, meeting early in the morning and during break times to  produce their designs and came up with a wide range of exciting images that were presented to Headteacher Dr Hazlewood following a Dragon’s Den-style afternoon involving Deputy Headteacher Alan Shelton, Library Manager Anne Stokes and graphics teacher Gary England.

“The standard of work produced by the students was exceptional” said teacher Mr England. “It was very difficult to select the winning designs, but we eventually chose several highly original pieces of work that will look wonderful in the new library”.

All the winning designs will be produced as part of the new library in the new St John’s school. The library will be on the first floor of the school’s atrium and highly visible to all visitors to the school.

In total ten groups designs were selected and the winners’ names will be listed in the new library. One group of six students Mary Hawkins, Becky Mason, Elen Pigott, Beth Roach, Johanna Verco and Dan Watkin had three of their designs chosen, including a huge frosted glass sign welcoming people to the school.
